FactButcher Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy describes how the FactButcher web app, account dashboard, Chrome extension, Telegram Bot, and FactButcher API (the "Service") handle data when you use FactButcher.

Who is responsible

The Service is operated by Teplitsa (Teplitsa of Social Technology, te-st.org) ("we", "us"), which is the party responsible for the personal data processed through the Service. For any privacy, support, or data-deletion request, contact us at support@factbutcher.com.

Data we collect and handle

  • Submitted text: The text you highlight, submit, or send to the bot for fact-checking.
  • Account data: If you register for an account, we process your email address, plan status, API keys, and subscription status. Payments and billing details are handled through Stripe.
  • Session data: The account dashboard stores sign-in session tokens in cookies so you stay signed in. The public web tool and Chrome extension do not require an account.
  • Telegram data: If you use the Telegram Bot, we may store your numeric Telegram user ID separately from the texts you send for fact-checking. We use it to operate the bot and process support or data-deletion requests. We do not store your Telegram username, first name, last name, or phone number in this registry.
  • Usage identifiers: The public web tool and Chrome extension create random pseudonymous identifiers for request analytics, quota, abuse prevention, and rate limiting. These identifiers are not login credentials and are not linked to an email address or FactButcher account.

How we use data

  • Provide the Service: Return fact-checking results for the text you submit.
  • Account management: Keep you signed in, manage subscriptions, and enforce plan limits.
  • Telegram support and deletion requests: Process support and data-deletion requests related to Telegram bot usage.
  • Service improvement: Monitor reliability, understand usage, and improve result quality.

How we protect request analytics

The public web tool and Chrome extension use random pseudonymous identifiers. Request logs and fact-checking analytics may associate submitted text, results, feedback, and operational events with the relevant pseudonymous identifier. The identifier does not contain an email address, is not a credential, and does not by itself identify a named person.

Other Service surfaces may use separate pseudonymous or hashed identifiers where appropriate. We restrict access to request-level data to authorized people who need it to operate the Service, respond to a request from the user, investigate abuse or security incidents, comply with law, or improve the Service using aggregated or de-identified information.

The Telegram contact registry is kept separate from fact-checking queries. It does not store request text, trace IDs, analytics hashes, or usage history.

Cookies and similar storage

The web app uses a small number of cookies. We do not use advertising, marketing, or cross-site tracking cookies, and we do not run behavioural profiling. Every cookie listed below is needed to deliver a feature you asked for, which is why the app does not show a cookie consent banner.

  • fb_anon_id — a random anonymous identifier created for this browser. It lets the Service apply soft usage limits without requiring an account. Stored for up to 2 years.
  • NEXT_LOCALE — remembers the interface language you selected (English or Russian). Set only when you switch the language yourself. Stored for up to 1 year.
  • sb-…-auth-token and related sb- cookies — sign-in session cookies set by Supabase, our authentication provider. They keep you signed in and are cleared when you sign out.

Website usage statistics are collected with Plausible Analytics. Plausible sets no cookies, writes nothing to your browser's local storage, and does not follow you across websites.

You can delete these cookies at any time in your browser settings, or block them entirely. Deleting them will sign you out and the app will treat you as a new visitor.

Data storage and retention

  • The web app stores an anonymous identifier and language preference in cookies, as listed above. Existing account sessions may also leave Supabase cookies until they expire or are deleted.
  • The Chrome extension stores a random anonymous identifier in local extension storage until you clear the extension's data or uninstall it. Pending requests, the latest result, and submitted-feedback state are kept in extension session storage so the popup can recover its state. The extension does not store an email address, API key, or authentication token.
  • The Service may log submitted text, fact-checking results, feedback, and pseudonymous identifiers to provide and secure the Service, monitor reliability, enforce limits, and improve quality.
  • The Telegram contact registry stores Telegram user IDs separately from fact-checking queries.
  • We retain logs and registry data only as long as needed for these purposes.

Data sharing

  • We do not sell your data.
  • Submitted text may be processed by third-party AI or fact-checking providers used by the Service, such as OpenAI, Google Fact Check Tools API, and Perplexity AI.
  • Fact-checking request analytics are processed through Langfuse.
  • Website usage statistics are processed through Plausible Analytics.
  • Authentication and account data are processed through Supabase.
  • Payments are processed through Stripe.
  • We use infrastructure providers to host and operate the Service.

Security

  • Data is transmitted over HTTPS.
  • Account-dashboard sign-in session tokens remain in browser cookies on your device. The cookies are limited to the FactButcher site and are not readable by other websites.
  • The Chrome extension sends requests only to the FactButcher web relay and does not contain the API credential used by that relay.

Chrome Web Store Limited Use

Our use of information received from the Chrome extension complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Data received from the Chrome extension is used only to provide and improve the user-facing fact-checking feature, maintain security, prevent abuse, enforce usage limits, and meet legal requirements. We do not sell extension user data, use it for advertising, use it to determine creditworthiness or lending eligibility, or transfer it for purposes unrelated to the extension's single purpose.

Your choices

  • Sign out in the account dashboard to remove its active session. Clear your browser cookies or extension data to reset the corresponding anonymous identifier.
  • Contact us to request deletion of your account data, removal of your Telegram user ID from the contact registry, or deletion of service-side logs where applicable.
